Salon de Muge opened in 2017 and is an extension of the well-known Kyoto Kikunoi restaurant, HIDDEN PATHS visited and tried some matcha parfait and chestnut maron kakigori.

"Freshly-brewed coffee and authentic warabimochi are offered from the afternoon for a relaxing time of coffee-drinking and sweets. Its aesthetic was designed after a traditional mountain cottage combined with more modern architecture, and this creates a calm atmosphere in which guests can forget about the passage of time while gazing at the green mossy garden outside." - Salon de Muge.

The cafe opens at 11:30 and serves lunch, Shigure Bento (5,500 yen), as a priority until 13:00. There is a ticketing waiting service and also be aware that children under 6 years old are not permitted. If you're visiting for sweets and tea then the afternoon is best, to avoid a long wait whilst lunch eaters finish (there also is not much waiting area, but a good point is that when reserving a numbered ticket you can input your telephone number, so if it's busy you can go for a walk nearby and be contacted when it's your turn (don't be too far away though!)).

The cafe has two floors, and both counter and table seating. The seating areas also face out on to the cafes traditional Japanese garden.

The first floor entrance seating area is quite a surprise on entering with it's tiled floor and artistic and colourful style giving a very modern feel in contrast to the old Japan style of the exterior of the building.

The second floor, pictured left, offers a more traditional Japanese feel if that's what you're looking for. On our visit, we chose the Matcha Parfait and the Maron Kakigori shaved ice, and neither disappointed our expectations!
